Back to the Future: Lincoln Owners Can Easily Upgrade 2010-2016 Vehicles to Have Connectivity Features

  • Ford SmartLink provides owners of 2010 – 2016 model-year Ford and Lincoln vehicles not equipped with a modem access to a wide array of connectivity features through the new platform
  • Features include remote start, lock and unlock, Wi-Fi access capable of hosting up to eight devices, and vehicle health, security and location alerts
  • Components of Ford SmartLink include a 4G LTE-enabled OBD II plug-in device, as well as a companion App and Web Portal used to activate remote features, receive alerts and schedule service appointments with the owner’s preferred dealer

Millions of current Ford customers stand to benefit from Ford SmartLink, a technology that enables connectivity features normally only available on new modem-equipped vehicles. Using a simple device that plugs into the OBD II port below the steering wheel, Ford SmartLink will give customers who own 2010 – 2016 model year Ford and Lincoln vehicles that are not equipped with a modem access to:

  • Smartphone-based remote start, lock and unlock.
  • 4G Wi-Fi hotspot capable of accepting up to eight devices.
  • Vehicle health and security alerts.
  • Vehicle location assistance.

“Ford SmartLink will surprise and delight owners of recent model-year vehicles by adding some of today’s most popular connectivity features” said Stephen Odell, executive vice president, Global Marketing, Sales and Service. “Offering it through our dealerships is another way to keep us connected with our customers and earn their loyalty.”

SmartLink can be obtained at Ford and Lincoln dealerships starting this summer.

With more than two years of research and development invested, the Ford SmartLink team of engineers, in collaboration with Delphi Automotive and Verizon Telematics, have ensured the technology will work seamlessly with Ford and Lincoln vehicles.

“From security to performance, we’ve conducted extensive testing and made a number of improvements to ensure Ford SmartLink enhances the customer experience for our owners,” said Raj Nair, executive vice president, Global Product Development, and chief technical officer.

“We are thrilled to offer this level of convenience and connectivity to our existing customers, extending the value of their vehicles and giving them just one more reason to love their Ford and Lincoln vehicles.”

Lincoln Uses Beauty, Drama and Authenticity for New Continental Campaign with Matthew McConaughey

The Lincoln Motor Company traveled to the edge of the Earth to find a backdrop dazzling enough to introduce its timeless, elegant flagship vehicle – the all-new 2017 Lincoln Continental.

“Entrance,” a new TV spot for the “That’s Continental” campaign featuring Matthew McConaughey, was shot on a shimmering glacial plain about 160 miles from Reykjavík, Iceland, with black sand and shallow water offset by a stunning, stark horizon.

This new ad campaign is incredibly important to Lincoln. “It’s fresh, contemporary and very visual,” says John Emmert, group marketing manager, The Lincoln Motor Company.

“While many are familiar with the Continental nameplate, we wanted them to see our all-new flagship in a whole new way,” he continues. “A car as iconic as Continental could only be shot in a unique locale – one not familiar to viewers.”

The ads were directed by acclaimed cinematographer Wally Pfister, known for “The Dark Knight” and “The Dark Knight Rises.” Pfister’s work on “Inception” landed him an Academy Award in 2011.

The Icelandic terrain provides an unforgettable framework for such an impressive car, says Jon Pearce, global chief creative officer for Hudson Rouge.

The conditions were extreme, he recalls, with the crew conducting shoots in raw, unpredictable temperatures and driving rain. But then rainbows would light up the sky. “The clouds would break, the winds would die down, and it would become absolutely beautiful,” says Pearce.

“Entrance” is one of several unconventional spots featuring McConaughey, each of which highlights a distinct quality of the Lincoln Continental. This piece showcases a dramatic, sweeping view of the front of the flagship vehicle.

Some segments of “That’s Continental” were shot in Los Angeles.

“Crafted,” another piece in the campaign, offers a wry take on nontraditional storytelling. And for the first time in a Lincoln ad, McConaughey is featured in the back seat to showcase some of the rear seat amenities available for Continental, including a chauffeur switch. The feature allows a passenger in the rear to move the front passenger seat forward for extra legroom.

Each narrative stands alone, says Emmert, but a common thread throughout deconstructs any preconceived notions viewers may hold about Lincoln – and the all-new Continental.

“That’s Continental” will begin airing Dec. 31. For more information, visit

Listen, Sound Matters, and Lincoln Knows the Importance of Premium

One of the first things a driver does in a car is turn on the audio system, which is why a premium audio experience is more important than ever.

“The Lincoln Motor Company knows that sound is powerful,” says Michael Celentino, chief engineer, Lincoln Continental. “And we want to provide the best music experience we can for our clients.”

That’s why the all-new Lincoln Continental, the company’s highly anticipated, redesigned flagship vehicle, features available Revel Ultima audio system developed to work in concert with the car’s interior design and acoustics.

Revel audio systems are designed and tested through computer-aided design, three-dimensional models, in presentation rooms and most importantly, in vehicles. Each system is designed specifically for that vehicle, with the placement, tuning, calibration and number of speakers customized to ensure superior sound quality and audio accuracy.

Moreover, every Revel audio system is tuned to the trim of the vehicle, because when interior materials are changed, sound changes as well.

The Importance of Premium

For audiophiles, Revel melds art and science for the ultimate luxury experience.

“What we’re doing through our technology is re-creating the sound and nuance of what the artist intended in the recording studio, but in a space that’s much smaller,” says Kevin Voecks, Acoustic Technologies HARMAN luxury audio, for Revel. “We want to deliver a realistic sound experience – whether it’s a single person singing into a mic, very dry, or a giant concert hall with lots of reverberation.”

Music producers are aware of the need for quality and authenticity as well. They know consumer habits and preferences and often will listen to song tracks they’re working on in vehicles, just to hear how the sound plays out in that environment. Given the popularity of radio, how a track sounds in a car can make or break a song.

“I’ll definitely listen to something I’m working on in the studio while I’m driving,” says Photek, a Los Angeles-based music producer. “I need to know how music sounds in that space.”

Cutting-edge Technology

QuantumLogic Surround, Revel’s next generation surround-sound technology, delivers a multidimensional experience to each vehicle occupant.

With QuantumLogic Surround, Lincoln Continental owners can use the vehicle touch screen to select from three distinct listening modes:

  • Traditional stereo
  • Audience, for an intimate concert experience where the boundaries of the vehicle seemingly disappear
  • On stage, a 360-degree experience that puts listeners seemingly in the middle of a soundstage, arranging individual instruments and musical elements throughout the cabin

Proprietary Revel Clari-Fi music restoration technology works in real-time to rebuild audio details often lost in the digital compression process. Clari-Fi intelligently and seamlessly reconstructs digitally compressed music for an enhanced listening experience regardless of source.

Celentino says creating warm, human, personally crafted experiences is what Lincoln is all about. “That includes bringing audio to life in the most authentic way,” he adds.

New Lincoln Continental Campaign by Photography Icon Annie Leibovitz

Lincoln Continental Campaign by Annie Leibovitz - Smail Lincoln Blog

Acclaimed photographer Annie Leibovitz called on memories of childhood trips and the romance of the open road as inspiration for a series of photographs to introduce the highly anticipated Lincoln Continental, now in dealer showrooms.

“That’s Continental,” is the tagline for a series of Leibovitz photo spreads that will appear, uncredited, in high-end print publications as well as social media feeds beginning Oct. 10.

“We partnered with the world’s pre-eminent portrait photographer to launch the new Lincoln flagship,” says Kumar Galhotra, president of The Lincoln Motor Company. “Annie Leibovitz is a photographer of substance. The rich, warm emotions her photos evoke, mirror the feelings we want our clients to experience on all their journeys in the new Lincoln Continental.”

Lincoln Continental Campaign by Annie Leibovitz - Smail Lincoln Blog

Leibovitz, admired for her use of bold color and unconventional poses, has photographed celebrities, literary icons, politicians and high-profile events. Her work has included covers for Rolling Stone and Vanity Fair – the latest featuring rock legend Bruce Springsteen. This is her first foray into car photography.

“Annie creates rich, engaging narratives through her photographs,” says John Emmert, group marketing manager of The Lincoln Motor Company. “And in this story, the Continental is the key character that enables a memorable journey.”

The new Lincoln Continental is the ultimate in quiet luxury and effortless power, heralded for its superior craftsmanship, inviting interior and thoughtful design details. The vehicle has been expressly designed for discerning clients seeking a world-class driving experience.

The photos for the campaign were shot in and around New York City with a small group – Leibovitz, her crew and the non-professional models – an actor, an artist, a musician and a film director (who brought along his dog, Seven, also featured in the photos).

The choice of surrounding the Continental with non-professional models reflects Leibovitz’ insistence on authenticity – another trait she shares with the Lincoln brand.

Although the original assignment required only six photos, Leibovitz, true to her nature, researched a route and created an entire narrative that was inspired by childhood road trips she took with her father.

“She said that’s how she first developed her photographic eye – by looking out the back window at the horizontal framing of the landscapes of America,” says Emmert. “So in the end, we have 10 different shots that tell a story with a nice backdrop of rural and urban – and all decidedly unconventional in terms of car photography.”

While the car has been completely redesigned and re-interpreted, the name – and the history – still resonates with the public.

“That’s why we’re using ‘That’s Continental,’ as our launch theme,” says Emmert. “It suggests a continental approach to life, as well. Being curious, being confident, wanting to know more … it’s the embodiment of Lincoln.”

2017 Lincoln MKZ Earns Top Safety Pick+ Rating

2017 Lincoln MKZ IIHS Top Safety Pick + Rating - Smail Lincoln Blog

The 2017 Lincoln MKZ has earned a Top Safety Pick + rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Improvements to the MKZ front-end structure have improved the score compared to previous models.

To earn a "Top Safety Pick +" rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (the highest rating the IIHS gives), a vehicle must have "good ratings in the small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests. It also must have an available front crash prevention system that earns an advanced or superior rating."

In Insurance Institute for Highway Safety track tests, MKZ avoided collisions at 12 mph and 25 mph. The car also has a forward collision warning component that meets National Highway Traffic Safety Administration criteria.

"The 2017 Lincoln MKZ also is available with a suite of intuitive, driver-assist technologies. Its Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection uses camera and radar technology to monitor the vehicle’s proximity to other vehicles and pedestrians. If a potential collision is detected, the system can alert the driver with visible and audible warnings and, if needed, pre-charge the brakes and increase brake sensitivity to help provide full responsiveness.

The lane-keeping system uses a forward-facing camera to detect lane markings. It can apply steering wheel torque and alert the driver with a steering wheel vibration should sensors detect drifting.

Finally, BLIS® (Blind Spot Information System) with cross-traffic alert uses radar sensors to alert drivers with lights in their sideview mirrors if another vehicle is detected in Lincoln MKZ’s blind spots. When drivers are backing up, the system can detect a vehicle approaching from either side, notifying drivers with a warning light and an audible tone."
